About

About Foxfire Therapy Group

FoxFire Therapy Group is a counseling practice supporting individuals, couples, and adolescents through seasons of transition, identity exploration, grief, and growth. Our work focuses on creating a thoughtful space where you can explore your experiences, understand what is changing, and move forward with intention.

Our Story

Why the name Foxfire?

Foxfire is a rare bioluminescence created by fungi growing in decaying wood. It appears in darkness, often unnoticed, illuminating forest floors with a soft, steady glow.
That image shapes the philosophy of this practice. Many people come to therapy during moments when something old has ended and something new has not yet taken form. These periods can feel disorienting, quiet, or unseen yet they often hold the conditions for growth.
Foxfire Therapy Group exists to support those moments. The work focuses on helping people recognize the insight, meaning, and direction already forming beneath the surface, and to move through transition with intention and care.

Our Vision

Foxfire Therapy Group is a counseling practice rooted in the belief that people move through life in chapters becoming, remembering, shedding, and rebuilding along the way. The work here centers on supporting individuals, couples, and adolescents during periods of transition, when identity is shifting and old stories no longer fit as they once did.
The practice is intentionally designed to grow as a group practice. Over time, Foxfire will include therapists who share a commitment to thoughtful, meaning-centered work with identity, grief, and life transitions. Each clinician brings their own voice and perspective, while working from shared values: curiosity, depth, integrity, and respect for the complexity of becoming.

Our Values

Meaning before momentum

We prioritize understanding and coherence so that change unfolds with stability and intention.

Respect for complexity

Identity, grief, and transition rarely move in straight lines. The work honors nuance, contradiction, and emergence.

Client authorship

Clients remain the primary authors of their stories. Therapy supports clarity and agency rather than prescription.

Grounded presence

The therapeutic relationship is steady, attuned, and thoughtful—designed to support difficult conversations without urgency or judgment.

Ethical creativity

Symbolic and creative elements are used as meaning-making tools, grounded in clinical practice and client choice.

As Foxfire grows, these values serve as the connective tissue across clinicians and offerings.

About Hunter Sunrise

I’m Hunter Sunrise, founder of Foxfire Therapy Group and a Clinical Mental Health Counseling Associate based in Portland, Oregon. I work with individuals, couples, and adolescents navigating identity evolution, grief and loss (including non-death loss), neurodivergence, gender identity, relationship change, creative and professional turning points, and the long middle spaces where clarity develops gradually.
My approach to therapy is integrative and reflective. I draw from narrative therapy, existential therapy, emotion-focused approaches, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), IFS-informed frameworks, and relational perspectives. For clients who find movement supportive of reflection and insight, I also offer walking therapy.
Before training as a therapist, I spent two decades in creative and leadership roles. That experience continues to shape how I understand identity, meaning, pressure, burnout, creativity, and the internal tensions that emerge in demanding professional and personal contexts.
At Foxfire, therapy centers on understanding experience, clarifying meaning, and supporting forward movement through transition work that honors both where you’ve been and who you’re becoming.
